Happenings for this week...

We are still working hard on our author letters this week. Our goal is still to have them ready to mail on Friday, November 11. I had a student ask me about postage and envelopes for the letters. I will take care of both. :) I can't wait to get them in the mail at the end of this week.

Starting next week, we will be preparing to begin book clubs. I am hoping we can learn from each other during our book clubs. It is always enlightening to hear their conversations about their books. They become really responsible and hold one another accountable for their reading assignments.

Other upcoming dates:
November 9th-End of Trimester 1, AR goals end for Trimester 1
November 10th-Teacher workday-No students
November 11th-Veteran's Program @ 1:00 anyone can attend!
November 11th-Mail author letters
November 14th-Discuss Book Clubs and make top 3 picks
November 15th-Begin books
Week of November 14-18-Set new AR goals for Trimester 2

Where has the time gone?

I can't believe it is already November and I am finally getting to my first post! The school year has been very busy! We have already finished Personal Narratives. We even shared our spooky stories on Monday! We did a good job adding the right amount of scary elements and humor too. I get the feeling some of the kids have written spooky stories before. :)

Right now we are working on writing our Favorite Author Letters. I can't wait to get them finished and in the mail. Then we all wait anxiously for a response letter, but once the letters get here it is all worth it.

Some of the things we have coming up in Language Arts:
November 9th-Trimester 1 AR Goals end.
November 11th-Author Letters should be ready to mail
November 14-Book Clubs begin
November 28-Students blog about their favorite books

We have a lot of exciting things taking place in the month of November and I will be more active in writing on our blog! Again, I apologize for the delay!

Remember if you have any questions feel free to email or call!

So much to do...so little time.

It has been too long since my last update! I will do my best to write more posts in a timely manner. Yikes!

We are currently working on Poetry in Language Arts. I am really enjoying the creativity the kids have. We are working on different elements of poetry right now. We also take the time to practice the new elements in our own poems. We are having a really fun time so far. I can't wait until we begin publishing our poems. They are going to be great!

This week, we are taking the final round of ISTEP. This is the multiple choice portion of the test. We will be testing on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. All of the testing times will be in the morning. Remember to get a good nights sleep, and a healthy breakfast each morning.

In the upcoming weeks I will be posting some of our poetry on the blog. In the meantime, check out these websites for poetry ideas.

Biographies, Book Clubs, & Iditarod

We are continuing to work on our Biography Research Papers in class. We are working really hard at completing our rough drafts, so we can type the final copies soon. I have read some really well written rough drafts already! The finished projects will be great!

This week we started Book Clubs. Although we don't have our first official discussions about our reading assignments until Friday, I am hearing some great conversations. I have also heard from several students that they were so into their book, that they read past their assignment. That is wonderful! I just know Friday will bring some great conversations and discussions! We will be finishing the first round of book clubs on March 25th. Keep reading!

Last, but certainly not least, we have been checking in on the Iditarod each day at the beginning of class. I can tell that several of the kids are really excited about it! I am thrilled to see their excitement! We are all eagerly cheering for our own favorites, and will be for the next few days. To check out the status of the race, head to the official website.

Science Fair is Complete!!!

We are finished with Science Fair for this year! All of our hard work paid off, because the finished products looked great! I am so VERY proud of my 5th graders! You did an amazing job. You will be experts for next year. Congratulations to those students that placed.

This week we will be working on our Biography Research Papers for the next few weeks. I will be teaching how to use an outline this week, and we will continue our research. My goal is for us to turn in final papers by Friday, March 11th. Hopefully, that will work. I am looking forward to working on these papers.

Our Pen Pals sent us a package last week! How cool!!! We all received presents and letters. It was really awesome to see our pen pals handwriting and illustrations. We will be working on writing responses next week, and sending actual letters. In the upcoming months we will be sending them another care package. If you have any ideas for our next package, let me know.

Finally, we are taking ISTEP next week. This is the written portion of the test. We will be testing Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings. Please be sure your child has a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast each morning.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to contact me.

Happy New Year 2011!

We are off to a great 2011! It has been a busy start to the new year! This week we are spending a lot of time on Science Fair. We learned about Problem & Hypothesis yesterday and Experimental Design today. Thank you Mrs. Brower for helping us through the whole Science Fair process. It has been really interesting to hear about all of the experiments that the kids are doing at home. I can't wait to see and hear about the final results. If you have any questions about Science Fair, please feel free to email, call, or stop in. I would be more than happy to help!

We spent time writing to our South Korean Pen Pals before break and we are eager to hear back from them in the upcoming weeks. While we were on break they sent us a Christmas card in the mail. SO EXCITING!!! Just today I sent our care package in the mail to South Korea. I am not sure who will be more anxious awaiting to hear from them when they receive it, me or the kids. :) We sent them Crayola crayons, an American flag, Milford Warrior pencils, candy canes, cards, Silly Bandz and something special for Lauren Korenstra Teacher.

We are still receiving responses from our favorite authors too! Each week we get a letter or two. The most exciting part is getting letters that are hand written by the author. What a unique artifact to keep and treasure!

Last but not least, I promised I would post the link for the Florida man that is living in the Lion enclosure for a month...so here it is. I watched it for a bit this evening, but it was dark. Since it is live, I would recommend checking it out before it gets dark. :)
